Diabetes Care Update

Two devices make life easier today for people with diabetes. The insulin pump delivers insulin continuously via a thin tube under the skin. You learn to adjust needed doses, giving you control and freedom. The continuous blood glucose monitor helps you fine-tune your treatment plan. For three days you wear a small sub-skin sensor that measures and averages your blood glucose. The results go to your health care provider for analysis. Coming in the future is a combination device in which the sensor takes readings and communicates directly with the pump.

A Life-saving Cooldown

Did you know that lowering your body temperature can increase your chances of recovering from stroke or cardiac arrest? Lehigh Valley Hospital is one of six hospitals around the country pioneering a new device called the Arctic Sun 2000. It cools a patient’s body temperature for 24 hours following a major stroke or heart stoppage. “The cooling limits oxygen flow to the brain,” says neurologist John Castaldo, M.D., “which reduces swelling and prevents additional brain damage.”
